Thursday, October 11, 2012 – Champions St George’s College and Zone C leaders Hydel’s battle for group honours and automatic berth to the Walker Cup knockout will go down to the wire after both teams scored massive victories in their penultimate preliminary round ISSA Digicel/Gatorade Manning Cup matches yesterday.

St George’s slammed Cumberland 10-0 on four goals from Romario Jones, a hat-trick from Cordel Benbow and one each from Mark Brown, Oshane Boothe and Davian Montique.

Hydel, meantime, clobbered Clan Carthy 8-0 with a hat-trick from Patrick Okonko and a double from Giovanni Green.

The result left both teams locked on 21 points, with 35 goals scored by each side. However, Hydel have conceded four goals while the ‘Georgians’ have let in five.

St George’s will host Clan Carthy, while Hydel entertain Denham in their final group fixtures on Saturday, and once again both teams will be looking to outgun each other to see who can finish with the better goal difference.

In the group’s other games, Denham Town moved four points clear into third spot on 12 points after they turned back Dunoon 2-1 on a double from Samuel Brady.

Meanwhile, Bridgeport took a major step towards securing top spot in Zone D after they defeated Tivoli 3-1 at the Edward Seaga Complex.

The result left Bridgeport (19 points) one point adrift of leaders Calabar, who drubbed Innswood 7-0.

Bridgeport have two games remaining, one against second-from-bottom St Mary’s College this Saturday.

In the group’s other game, St Mary’s College and Haile Selassie played to a 2-2 draw.

In Zone A, Excelsior (16 points) regained sole leadership of the group, avenging their first-round defeat in the process with a 4-0 whipping of Greater Portmore. They are now three points ahead of Norman Manley, who have played a game less.

However, Penwood also kept their hopes alive after beating Campion 3-1 to move within a point of Norman Manley.

Only two games will be played this afternoon in Zone E. St Catherine host Trench Town and Jonathan Grant take on Spanish Town High. Both are scheduled to start at 3:30 pm.
