Defending champions Rusea’s High and last year’s beaten finalist Clarendon College but turned back unbeaten opponents as the first round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition came to an end on Saturday as they both extended their perfect starts.

Rusea’s High blanked nine-man Frome Technical 3-0 with three second-half goals at the Collin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea, for their fifth win in Zone B while Clarendon College beat up on Lennon High 5-1 in Zone H in Spalding for their fourth straight win as well.

At Jarrett Park, Cornwall College pushed their win streak to four straight, and yet to concede a goal, beating St James High 3-0 in Zone A for their fourth straight as well.

Both Rusea’s and Frome went into their game with good credentials, but it was the home team that took the points with two goals from Kenroy Campbell and one late from Jhavoy Diaz as they joined Garvey Maceo High on five wins each.

Nique Daley, Ricardo McIntosh and Marlon Beckford were on the scoresheet as Clarendon College scored three second-half goals to beat Lennon High 5-1 in their Zone H top of the zone clash.

Lennon High who also played most of the second half with ten players had their three games win streak snapped.

At Jarrett Park, Cornwall College took the lead in the first minute through Shavon McDonald then got goals from a defender in the second half and a spectacular bicycle kick from Solano Birch in the 86th minute as they cruised by St James High 3-0.

St James High have lost two of their last three games, earning one point in the process after getting off to a fast start with back to back 2-1 wins over Anchovy High and Irwin High.
