Former champions Garvey Maceo ran their record to five straight wins at the start of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football season on Friday after beating Winston Jones High 4-0 in their Zone M game played at Pratville, Manchester.

Team captain Andre Gayle led from the front with two goals while Jermaine Muirhead and Deandre Cunningham both got a goal as ‘The Cubans’ became the first daCosta Cup team to win their first five games this year and raced to 15 points, well ahead of Denbigh High and Glenmuir High who are both on seven points in joint second place.

Dinthill Technical scored seven goals in back to back games as they hammered Tacius Golding High 7-0 in their Zone K game. Tevin Cheese scored a brace for Dinthill Technical as he took his season tally to six goals and the team improved too and took over the sole leadership of the zone ahead of Charlemont High who plays on Saturday.

After 12 straight losses in Zone A dating back to 2017 season Irwin High earned their first point of the season after battling to a 3-3 draw against Maldon High at Irwin.

Cambridge High scored their first win of the season, edging Merlene Ottey High 1-0 in Zone B as Spot Valley High continued to stall in Zone C, failing to win for a third straight game, held 0-0 by William Knibb Memorial.

Maggotty High wasted a chance to take the lead in Zone E when they played out a 1-1 draw with Newell High but drew level with leaders St Elizabeth Technical, both on 10 points. STETHS who will play Munro in their ST Elizabeth derby on Saturday has played a game less.

In Zone I, Oracabessa High pulled to within a point of joint leaders Browns Town and Ocho Rios after a 2-0 win over Iona High. Oracabessa High are on nine points, three more than York Castle High but a point behind Browns Town and Ocho Rios.
